Most of the advice marketed to private lenders comes from people who have never worked inside a credit shop. We have. Thirty-five years of it. That experience, combined with active licensure and access to institutional resources, is the difference.

Our credit experience spans residential mortgage, investor lending, commercial finance, private credit, and distressed assets. Thousands of loans underwritten, originated, managed through default, worked out, and in some cases liquidated. We have sat on both sides of the credit desk, origination and collections. We have seen what makes a loan recover and what makes it a total loss.

That cycle matters. Anyone can underwrite a loan in a strong market. The value of experienced credit judgment is what it produces when the market turns.

Institutional tools. Direct access.

Most private lenders cannot independently pull a full tri-merge credit report, access institutional valuation tools, or run a loan through a commercial-grade loan origination system. We can. Those resources do not make a lender sophisticated on their own, but the absence of them forces the lender to rely on borrower-supplied information, which is the single most common source of credit decision error in private lending.

Specifically we maintain:

  • •  Active NMLS licensure (held through Castle Rock Capital Funding, our separate origination practice)
  • •  Access to commercial credit reporting, including full tri-merge pull capability
  • •  Loan origination system access for structural review and stress testing
  • •  Commercial valuation resources beyond public comparable data
  • •  Direct working knowledge of current market conditions, pricing, and underwriting standards because we are still originating loans

Consulting only. No loan brokering. No referral fees.

The Mad Lender is an advisory practice. We do not originate your loans. We do not earn fees from any party to your deals. We do not steer you to preferred vendors, title companies, or lenders. Our compensation comes from you, for credit work delivered to you, and nothing else.

This independence is structural. Castle Rock Capital Funding, our mortgage origination business, is operated separately. The two businesses reinforce each other’s credibility, but the consulting engagement is never used as a funnel to originate your loan. If you ever need origination, we will refer you to a third party and decline any fee.

A Short Note on Who Runs the Practice

The practice is led by Doug Smith, a senior credit professional with more than 35 years of institutional lending experience across residential, investor, commercial, private credit, and distressed assets. Doug has underwritten and managed thousands of loans through the full credit cycle, including default, workout, and liquidation, and holds active NMLS licensure through Castle Rock Capital Funding.

The practice is intentionally small. We do not run cohorts, bootcamps, or course funnels. Client intake is selective.

The capital is yours. The judgment should be earned.
